Objective:
To create an event to raise awareness and help generate buzz about the DVD release of Life After Tomorrow, the award-winning documentary about the original Annie Orphans, in the Los Angeles community.
Elements:
Legendary Bingo is considered a West Hollywood cultural landmark. It was established in 1998 by Jeffery Bowman, who is now known to Los Angeles as Bingo Boy. Every Wednesday night at Hamburger Mary’s, Jeffery hosts two “shows” that feature non-traditional games of Bingo with names like “Blackout” and “Chopsticks” that involve loud and active audience participation. Each show supports a local charity and often includes a celebrity ball-caller. After taking a victory lap around the restaurant, each bingo winner is provided with a basket of prizes. Over the past 10 years, Legendary Bingo has established a considerable following and Bingo Boy’s newsletter currently reaches over 19,000 people each week.
Allied Live partnered with Jeffery to promote Life After Tomorrow at Legendary Bingo. Jeffery was provided with a screener of the DVD so that he could speak about the film before, and during, the game. Life After Tomorrow was also featured in his newsletter to 19,000 people. Finally, the live shows on one Wednesday night revolved around Life After Tomorrow. The event included on-site signage, 20 DVD giveaways, one in each winner prize package, and distribution of promotional postcards with every Bingo card. In addition, Co-Directors and Producers Julie Stevens and Gil Cates, Jr., along with a number of the orphans featured in the documentary, attended the event as guest ball-callers. The guests were interviewed about their experiences in Annie and about the documentary throughout the night.
Overview of Results:
Through this event and the publicity leading up to it, information about the DVD release of Life After Tomorrow directly reached nearly 20,000 individuals in the Los Angeles area. In addition to the feature in the Bingo Boy newsletter, the Wednesday night bingo games had a full audience of approximately 400 people.
